What is Immunotherapy?

Immunotherapy involves using the body’s own immune system to detect and attack cancer cells. By either boosting the immune response or training immune cells to better recognize cancer, immunotherapy can provide long-lasting protection against cancer recurrence. Various types of immunotherapy treatments include checkpoint inhibitors, CAR T-cell therapy, and cancer vaccines.

Types of Immunotherapy

  • Checkpoint Inhibitors: These drugs block proteins that prevent immune cells from attacking cancer cells, helping the immune system to better identify and destroy tumors.
  • Cancer Vaccines: These vaccines help the immune system recognize cancer cells as foreign invaders and target them for destruction.
  • CAR T-cell Therapy: This approach involves modifying a patient’s T-cells to better target cancer cells, effectively turning the body’s immune cells into cancer fighters.
